Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What post mastectomy products do you carry?
Second Nature carries a wide selection of bras, silicone and non silicone prosthesis, lumpectomy shells/forms and other post surgical undergarments.  We also offer the LINDI-SKIN line of skin care products for people who have undergone cancer treatment.  Please visit our products page for more information. If you are looking for something you do not see in our store, please call so we can assist you.

Does insurance cover post mastectomy items?
Yes, most insurances including Medicare cover up to 80% of the cost of these items.  If you also have a supplemental insurance policy, they may cover the remaining 20% of costs.  We would be glad to help you determine if your insurance covers these goods.  Give our office a call at 1-800-950-2302.

How do I pay for my purchase from Second Nature?
Second Nature accepts Visa and Mastercard.  We will be glad to electronically file a claim with your insurance carrier for reimbursement at no additional charge.  We gladly accept checks and money orders, but those forms of payment will delay delivery.

What do most insurances allow or cover each year?
Medicare and most other insurances allow up to six bras a year, two non silicone forms and two post surgical  undergarments.  A silicone breast form is covered once every two years.  Please see our policies page for warranty information.

Do I need a prescription from my doctor to purchase these items?
Yes and no.  Since post mastectomy goods are covered under DURABLE MEDICAL EQUIPMENT, a prescription or CMN (Certificate of Medical Necessity) is required to file an insurance claim.  Second Nature can obtain a CMN for you if you prefer.  However, if you would like to make a purchase without filing an insurance claim, no prescription is needed.

What if I do not like what I’ve ordered or it is the wrong size?
Second Nature will exchange an unworn item up to 30 days from your purchase date.  Please visit our policies page for more information.

How soon after my surgery can I wear a bra and prosthesis?
We advise you wait six to eight weeks after surgery to order to have a fitting for a regular bra and breast form.  This is to ensure your body is healing properly and all swelling has subsided.  You can ask your doctor if you are ready for a fitting during your post op visit.

Why is it necessary to wear a breast form after a mastectomy?

When a breast  is lost, it is necessary to replace the missing weight.  This will help prevent any balance problems and also curvature of the spine and neck.  Balance problems are often reported when a woman fails to wear her breast form often enough.  Having a breast form also helps restore a woman’s self confidence and help her feel herself again.
